Dr. Joshua P. Johansen received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1998 and then worked in the lab of Howard Fields at UCSF until 2003. He then obtained his Ph.D. in 2007 working in the lab of Hugh Tad Blair at the University of California, Los Angeles followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in Joseph LeDoux’s lab at New York University from 2007 until 2011. During this time, he identified neuronal coding, circuit and plasticity mechanisms controlling how aversive experiences trigger associative emotional learning.

Dr. Joshua Johansen is a Team Leader (equivalent to US Assistant Professor) at the Laboratory for the Neural Circuitry of Learning & Memory at the University of Tokyo, RIKEN Center for Brain Science. Dr. Johansen studies how aversive experiences change the brain to produce memories and adaptive changes in behavior. The Department of Psychology and Brain Sciences at Dartmouth College will be hosting his talk on "Teaching the Brain to Fear" on February 14th, 2020, from 3:30-4:30 pm at Moore B03.
